The Core Technology: Language Models Trained on Code
AI code assistants are built on large language models (LLMs) trained on enormous datasets of code — public GitHub repositories, documentation, Stack Overflow, and more. They are not databases of code snippets. They are statistical models that predict what text should come next given the preceding context.
How Autocomplete Actually Works
When you are typing and the AI suggests a completion, the model is predicting: "given this file, these imports, and these preceding lines of code, what tokens are most likely to come next?" It is a sophisticated pattern matcher informed by millions of examples of similar code. When it gets things right, it is because your code pattern closely resembles patterns in its training data.
Why AI Hallucinates APIs That Do Not Exist
The model is predicting plausible tokens, not looking up documentation. If you ask it to use a library function, it will produce what a plausible function call would look like based on training data — even if that exact function does not exist. This is especially common with newer libraries or recent API changes that post-date training data.
Context Windows Matter Enormously
The context window determines how much code the model can "see" at once. A small context window (8K tokens) means the model cannot see your full file, let alone your entire project. Cursor''s codebase indexing addresses this by pre-processing your repository and retrieving relevant files to include in context. This is why Cursor performs better on large projects than Copilot.
The Key Limitations to Internalize
AI code assistants do not "run" or "test" code unless they have explicit agentic tool capabilities. They cannot look up current documentation. They degrade significantly on uncommon languages, internal frameworks, and code that differs from common patterns. Use them as fast, knowledgeable collaborators — not infallible oracles.
